Khalidi said he supports Obama for president “because he is the only candidate who has expressed sympathy for the Palestinian cause.”
This is an assumption that many American-Arabs are working off of when supporting Senator Obama’s candidacy. Many have heard that he was involved in the local Arab-American community in Chicago when he was a state senator there and that he indeed expressed sympathy for Arab causes, notably Palestine. What they miss, Khalidi included, is that Obama did a complete 180 when he got into the Senate and has not made one peep in support of anything Palestinian, Arab, Muslim, Lebanese, or otherwise non-Israeli in the Middle East. He has been taken to task over his previous connections to the Arab-American community in Illinois; he has assured the nation that his view of Israel is not different from anyone else’s. Note that he has not had to explain his commitment to the Palestinian or Arab causes, either with respect to the Conflict or human rights or anything at all really (Via Angry Arab).
